Essential oils are safe for the entire family, even our fur babes.
COMMON SENSE FOR FUR BABES AND ESSENTIAL OILS
While there is some controversy surrounding using essential oils on animals, when used properly they are part of a well-rounded program to help your pets thrive in a happy, healthy life.
The key importance is to use only pure, high-quality + rigorously tested essential oils like Doterra's. This is true for you, your kids, AND your fur babes! In fact, you can find three things to look out for in your essential oils in Massage Sense's article HERE.
Some of the benefits of using essential oils with your fur babes includes supporting calming emotions, soothing muscles/joints, deodorizing unpleasant aromas, and maintaining overall wellness..
FUR BABES AND ESSENTIAL OILS: TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED
Dogs and cats in particular have 200–300 million olfactory receptors (humans have only 5–6 million). Their sense of smell is very sensitive, so when diffusing, be sure to use a water-based diffuser and only diffuse 4–5 drops at a time in an open area where Bowzer can leave the room if desired.
• Tip #1: Start small. Start with a small amount of a diffused or diluted essential oil, and then observe your pets' behavior.
• Tip #2: Diffuse. When diffusing, be sure to use a water-based diffuser and use approx four to five drops at a time in an open area, where Biscuit can leave the room if desired. And don't forget to keep your diffusers in a safe place where whiskers can’t knock them over.
• Tip #3: Dilute. Always dilute essential oils down to 1–2 percent (100 drops of carrier oil for every one drop of essential oil) before topical application. Dilute even more for animals under 10 pounds.
FUR BABES AND ESSENTIAL OILS: OILS TO AVOID
There are a few oils to avoid with pets. However, there are alternative options to the oils you cannot use!
USE this not that:
* Instead of Tea Tree→ use Geranium, Arborvitae, Myrrh, or Cedarwood.
* Instead of Wintergreen→ use Copaiba, Frankincense, or AromaTouch.
* Instead of Cassia→ use On Guard, Oregano, or Thyme.
And now you're probably wondering what you CAN actually use! Just like us, oils can support the various body systems of your animals. Here is a list I have compiled for you:
FUR BABES AND ESSENTIAL OILS: WHAT TO USE AND FOR WHAT
Cardiovascular Support: Helichrysum, Cypress, Marjoram, Copaiba
Digestive Support: ZenGest/DigestZen®, Ginger, Cardamom, Fennel, Coriander

If you're like me and you've got real human babies too (I have two of them - I can't believe it some days!), I wrote an article to help bring essential oils into play time: 'Playing With Essential Oils: Kid Approved Recipes for Fun!'

Hi, I'm Melissa 👋🏻
If you hang around me long enough I will convince you that you are worth anything your heart desires. Yes, anything!
I live on an acreage on a small island on the West Coast of Canada (Salt Spring Island) with my husband, two boys and animals.
I pump my tires on empowering women to make themselves a priority, and living an intentionally clean and natural lifestyle- I love to live sustainably and I like to DIY the shit out of everything.
When I was employed, I quickly learned that I hated working on other people's terms. I disliked trading my precious time to build somebody else's dream and I wanted to be the one raising my babies at home with me. The essential oil industry has allowed me to build my dream life and dream business from home.
You can find me on Instagram for daily tips for self-care, essential oil education, and lots of laughter.
